More about Anna Nicole and his other discoveries
PAUL MARCIANO: Anyway, that ‘s the story . Then we shot in Miami, on South Beach.
INGRID SISCHY : The day of Hurricane Andrew, right?
PAUL MARCIANO: The Century Hotel. You know the Century Hotel? It’s like 12 or 15 rooms . We shot that day — the first day, the second day. The third day is the last day we shot and Hurricane Andrew was coming .
PAUL MARCIANO : No clothes fit her . We shot some dresses. Nothing fits her. We have to cut the dresses on the back to fit her breasts. She is so big. And the catalog — have you seen the catalog we did?
INGRID SISCHY: Yes, you did. I even had from the past — from the old days I have it. It’s unbelievable.
PAUL MARCIANO : That’s what — the cops come again and say, “You have to pack. The hurricane is hitting the city in one hour. You’ve got to pack.” And we said, “Please, we just have to finish two shots. “No, you pack now .” So meanwhile we are packing, and we are shooting . Everybody is loading on trucks. On the last picture we shot, sure enough, the hurricane hit an hour later and we are taking off to Los Angeles. We run to the airport and we go and take off before Andrew hit .
SANDY BRANT : That ‘s amazing .
PAUL MARCIANO :That was the day we shot that campaign . Then we shot after that in New York. I call Irwin Winkler, who is a very good friend of mine for 20 years. I said, ”I want to do something like Raging Bull . I said , “Can you give me the location?” He said, “Absolutely,” and he gave me all the locations where Scorsese had done Raging Bull , the hotel , the boxing club .
INGRID SISCHY : Wow.
PAUL MARCIANO : And we shot Anna Nicole there with a guy named Byron . We create the whole story there with Daniella Federici. We did a video – I mean , gorgeous video — magnificent .
INGRID SISCHY : But what was so amazing about that, I remember — Sandy and I came to a Guess concert around that time. You had just started to work with Anna Nicole. Jackson Brown as part of the concert sang on the stage Paul and she was there. You introduced us to Anna Nicole. I remember her saying she wanted to pinch herself because she didn’t think it was real that she was really there with Jackson Brown . And it was like its own Marilyn Monroe film ; you discovering her, changing her name .
PAUL MARCIANO : She was in awe of everything . She met people in Hollywood . She sat in restaurants with me . She would say, “Oh my gosh, look at who is sitting there. That cannot be .I mean , such actors like Tom Cruise or — I mean , people walking in the restaurant that she said, “It cannot be . It cannot be.” I mean , Travolta would be there, like in Spago and — she could not believe . And unfortunately, it went — she was very influence able and she hung out with the wrong crowd at one point and she lost it .
INGRID SISCHY : So Paul , one more — is there a girl today who you would — of the present who you think — because you keep making these discoveries . You know?
PAUL MARCIANO: I think the girl – I mean , I have many after that .
INGRID SISCHY : Laetitia Casta, Irina Shayk .
PAUL MARCIANO: Laetitia Casta, when I hired her, when I hired her she was 14. I get the picture and I see that picture and she comes here in Los Angeles to shoot, so she come to Guess, but don ‘t forget I don ‘t do any casting . So she walked in Guess and I see a girl walking to go in the hallways — a little girl. I said , “Where are you going,” and she answered me in a very big French accent, “I’m looking for the bathroom .” I said, “Who are you?” She said, “Well, I’m here to work. I’m here for a job . I’m working here .” “You ‘re here to work? You’re like 11 years old .” She said, “No , I’m 14 years old and I have an authorization from my parents .” She said, “Now in France, I’m a model .”
I said, “A model ?” She said, “Yeah.’ She said, “My name is Casta .” I said, “Oh my gosh, I’m the one who booked you .” She was a little nothing . She was so small, but such an incredible body, incredible face . And she was — I swear without any makeup and hair, with a little short and T-shirt, you thought that she was 10 or 11. We put the makeup , we put the hair, we put the dress and you thought she was like 20. The pictures of her the first shooting we did were amazing, incredible . She was so beautiful.
SANDY BRANT: And that was Dewey Nicks.
PAUL MARCIANO : That was Dewey Nicks. You ‘re absolutely right . I mean , she was tiny and no agency would hire her because she was too short and too busty . She was too big. But that ‘s exactly what we wanted for Guess. That ‘s what we loved . The woman should be feminine and the man should be masculine through the image of what we wanted, our story of the movies and books.
INGRID SISCHY : That ‘s so great .Paul, you ‘ve had one after the other, name after name . So for today, is there somebody?
PAUL MARCIANO: Kale Upton .
INGRID SISCHY: You know, we ‘re about to shoot her . Bruce is about to shoot her for us for German Vogue.
PAUL MARCIANO : I found her with Usai. Usai called me and because he knows what type of girl I like, he said , “I found a girl that you would like. It’s in line with Eva Herzigova , Claudia Schiffer.” I said, “That would be tough.” I said , “Let me shoot her and I will show you .” I said, “No, I want to see pictures first. You don ‘t shoot her before I see pictures . He sent me some pictures and I said , “Well, she has an amazing body and beautiful face .” He said, “Let me give the Guess look in the line of Eva and Claudia .” He does pictures of swimwear, lingerie and jeans with her . The pictures blew me away . That ‘s not enough. I meet her with Usai after the shoot. The personality was the same as Eva Herzigova, I mean, bursting out of vitality, bursting out of life, giggling , laughing, funny . She was 17. Now she ‘s 19.
I shot campaign after campaign after campaign, but she still has some baby fat and so in some pictures she came out well . Some pictures she came out less. And she was missing like one year. We shot like four campaigns .Suddenly, now she became so popular . Anyway , she is now with Guess for the next two campaigns . I think she is becoming a huge star .
I don ‘t want to hold you back long . I didn’t expect to be that long for you .
INGRID SESCHY : Sorry , no it’s brilliant .
PAUL MARCIANO : I haven ‘t talked to anybody that long on my creative campaign or anything .
